ESSENTIAL IELTS WRITING STRATEGIES. TASK 1 (ACADEMIC).

GENERAL APPROACH.

You should spend 20 minutes on Task 1 (150 words). Task 2 (250 words) isĀ  longer because it is worth twice as many marks. Keep calm throughout the test and have the belief that you will do the best you can.

BEFORE YOU WRITE.

Read the task carefully and note down the key words. If you do not interpret the information given correctly, you will lose marks.

WHILE YOU WRITE.

Introduce the information using your own words as far as possible. If you copy the question, you will not get any marks. Summarise the key points based on the information given. If you do not include key ideas or fail to express them clearly and coherently, you will lose marks. Include an overview of the information in your introduction and/or conclusion. If your answer does not have an overview you will lose marks.

Try to use a wide range of appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures. You will get more marks if you do so. Organise your answer into paragraphs (Introduction – Main Body – Conclusion) and use appropriate linking words to develop your ideas. If you organise your answer well and use a range of linking and reference words, you will be rewarded with more marks.

AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED WRITING.

Make sure you have written at least 150 words. You will lose marks if you have written a short answer. You will not get any extra marks for long answers. Check your grammar, spelling and punctuation. Any mistakes you make will reduce your marks.
